These finely crafted bench planes by Clifton are a joy to use. The No. 5 Jack Planes are ready to use straight from the box with precision ground sides and sole and do not need hours of flattening and fettling to make them fit for use - though final honing of the blade is recommended to suit individual preferences. No doubt you've considered Clifton planes if you're looking for premium performance at a reasonable price. If you're looking for a good general purpose plane for the workshop, the No. 5 should be a top contender. The No. 5 Jack Plane has a good weight and size for general use at 6.9 lbs and 14". The hand forged 2" wide iron is bedded at a 45 degree angle for good performance in a variety of uses. The design of this high-performance bench plane is based on the famous Stanley Bedrock series with a fully machined Frog and body seating pad. The Bedrock design ensures the blade is held with absolute rigidity thereby preventing chatter. A few modern improvements from Clifton allows for the mouth to be easily adjusted to a virtually zero opening without dismantling the frog and iron assembly thereby allowing the finest of shavings to be taken even on the most difficult woods. There's no loss of stability or control even when you go from heavy work to fine finishing. The Clifton No. 5 features a body of grey cast iron with brass fittings and handsome bubinga wood knob and handle. The 0.12" thick plane iron is made from cryogenically treated 01 steel, hardened and tempered to Rc 60 - 62, then precision ground. This model also features a special two-piece cap iron for solid clamping. Crafted in England to a very high level of fit and finish. At a weight of 6.9 lbs, this plane is substantially heavier than Stanley or Record of the same size.
