Premium Froe - Heavy Duty Tapered Blade - Biber Classic by Mueller - Hand Forged in Austria |
Used for splitting shingles, splitting oak logs for wheel spokes, splitting wood for chair legs and so on, the froe is typically driven into the wood by striking it with a Mallet or a Club and then rocked sideways while the edge is forced further down into the wood until the split opens up fully. This is our best quality Froe. It has been hand forged in Austria at the Himmelsberger Zeughammerwerk from top quality steel and then expertly hardened and tempered for the best combination and hardness and toughness. It is a very well made and heavy duty Froe with a razor sharp blade measuring 13-3/4" long (excluding the socket) and 2-1/8" wide. Importantly, the blade thickness tapers! At the base, the thickness is about 3/8" tapering down to about 1/8" just where the bevel begins. As a result of this taper, this Froe will be more effective in splitting that any of our other froes. The 13-1/2" long hickory handle has been securely attached to the massive socket (1/4" thick socket walls) by means of a wooden wedge as well as a conical steel wedge. Made in Austria. We recommend the use of a heavy wooden mallet for striking the froe.
