Primus Reform Smooth Plane by E.C. Emmerich |
The Primus line of wooden planes by E.C. Emmerich is steeped in the Continental European woodworking tradition and enhanced with some of the advances you need in a modern workshop. These wooden planes work wood in the time honored way that no machine can approach. The Primus Reform Smooth Plane is arguably the Mercedes of German wooden planes. It incorporates the following features: - Adjustable throat size by sliding a section of the front sole which is firmly secured by a screw head on top of the plane body.
- Spring loaded clamp that secures the blade more firmly and prevents backlash. Spring pressure can be adjusted with the knob at the back of the plane.
- Precision control of the cutting depth through the depth adjustment wheel.
- Lever to adjust the blade parallel to the sole.
It doesn't get much better than this. Features a handsome dark cherry body with a premium lignum vitae sole. The 1 7/8" (48mm) wide iron is hardened to Rc 61 and is bedded at 50 degrees in a 8 7/8" long plane body. If you anticipate planing a lot of hardwood or resin bonded material (and are looking for the ultimate upgrade), you may also want to consider getting a Rc 64 HSS replacement blade. Made in Germany. This famous tool company traces it's roots back to 1852 when master craftsman, Friedrich-Wilhelm Emmerich, founded E.C.E. in Remscheid Germany. Back in those days, most cabinet makers made their own tools. Friedrich made such fine planes that his colleagues offered to buy them for their own use. Soon the founder and his son Max, had to leave their small workroom and build a plant to meet the demand for their planes. Today, E.C.E. is still owned and run by the Emmerich family of craftsmen in the same town.
