Tapered Spoon Bit by Clifton |
This spoon bit has approximately a 15 degree taper. It is used by chairmakers for boring or reaming tapered holes in the seats and arms of chairs - in particular Windsor chairs. When reaming a prebored straight sided hole, the Chairmaker's Spoon Bit is inserted into the hole and rotated in a clockwise direction with a carpenter's brace until the desired taper is achieved.
When boring into solid wood, the bit should be started in a straight position and after a "dish" has been created and the bit has begun to "bite" into the wood, the angle of boring can be changed by tilting the brace and bit until the desired angle is reached. This method will enable you to bore a tapered hole at any angle.
The Chairmaker's Spoon Bit is hand forged from carbon steel, carefully heat treated and then hand ground to a fine edge. The spoon bit may be honed by using a slip stone on the inside of the cutting edge - never touch the outside edge. Overall length is 7" of which about 5" is blade and 2" is shank. The taper is such that the width starts out at about 1-1/4" tapering down to about 3/16" at the tip. The combined angle taper is about 15 degrees. Crafted in England by Clifton.
