The draw knife (also known as a draw shave), had many specialised applications in days gone by. In addition to the traditional use of debarking logs, the draw knife was used by a variety of trades (Carpenter, Chairmaker, Cooper, Wheelwright, etc.) for shaping operations and for the rapid removal of surplus wood. We offer a full selection in various sizes and blade designs.
Typically, for shaping purposes a smaller one is the preferred choice as it offers better control. Conversely, for removing bark from a log, a larger draw knife would be a better choice. In general, a curved blade design has a more heavy-duty forging than the straight blade draw knife. As far as how to use the knife is concerned, you typically would draw it towards you. However, although more cumbersome, it is possible to also push it away from you. You may use it with the bevel down or up. Try it both ways and select the method that works best for your application.
