Kataba Saws

Kataba Saws cut on the pull stroke as opposed to Western saws which cut on the push stroke. In use, the tension from the pulling force keeps the blade straight. As a result, the saw blades can be made extra thin with very narrow kerfs (width of cut). In turn, a narrow kerf means less friction which reduces the power needed to make the cut. The end result is a fast and controlled cut with a high degree of accuracy. The term Kataba Saws refers specifically to a single-sided saw with a slightly thicker blade relative to the Dozuki. The thicker blade eliminates the need for a reinforced back and allows for deep and long cuts. In terms of general woodworking and fine carpentry, the Kataba is probably the most useful general purpose saw out of all Japanese saws.
